Almost there! Prequel Comic! 4 days left!
over 3 years ago – Fri, Oct 23, 2020 at 06:02:10 PM

Hey gang! I just wanted to say AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA we're almost there! I've been refreshing the page like crazy haha. To celebrate, I'm blowing the dust off this comic I made for school.

This follows Rei aka "Prince Reille" into his knight training, many years before his banishment. It focuses on his first crush, I mean, his first friend Lux who may or may not appear in later books ; )

I hope you enjoy! We're almost to the goal!

Goodreads Page! Thank you for 2k!

Hi everyone! I'm so excited that we're 2/3 of the way there :D I'm still a little nervous but everyone says the last day of a campaign is when a ton of backers come in, so I'm hoping we'll still get funded!

In the meantime, I set up a goodreads page for the book here. I'm still figuring out how to set up an author profile, but it's in the works!

Again so grateful for all of your support, it means a lot to me <3

Hi guys!! We're halfway there with 18 days left to go!! I am so excited about getting closer to that goal, it's finally becoming real to me haha. Thank you for the nice comments as well :') I appreciate them.

Here's the first part of the next chapter to celebrate! This time from Waldon's POV <3

Chapter 2: Lunch

Waldon

Waldon had no idea what the hell he was doing.

He politely sat at the table with Rei, watching the other man scarf down a sandwich before chugging several cups of water. Waldon studied him quietly, noting his bruises and the way he shifted uncomfortably in the chair like something was digging at his side. His hair was tangled in knots, with curls framing the right side of his face; the left was shaved off.

“And then they chased me here, and you saved my ass. Thanks again for that, by the way.” Rei explained between bites. The smaller man had recounted the details of his detainment and escape in disjointed bursts, still trying to piece it all together himself. Clearly, some details were getting lost, as he was distracted by the food.

Waldon slid his own plated sandwich over to Rei, who blinked in surprise but accepted the offer. Waldon let his chin rest in the palm of his hand, “Maybe you should take that bandanna off then?”

Rei looked down and went to touch at the red cloth around his neck, as if he had forgotten he was wearing it. “Yeah, you’re probably right.” He tugged it off over his head, looking down at it in his hands.

Waldon was surprised at how sad Rei looked, “How long were you with them?”

“About a year. We would mostly just steal shit from rich people.” Rei sighed and picked up his glass of water, “I was supposed to make sure no one was home when we went in, but I fucked up and got us all in trouble. Scarlet told me to knock out the witness but she was like, a little girl for Mahir’s sake.” He frowned. "I couldn't do it."

Waldon’s eyebrow raised at the use of the god’s name. Mahir, god of Justice and Loyalty, popular among soldiers. Interesting, Waldon noted. He had never been the religious type himself.

“I think you did the right thing.” Waldon managed to smile.

“No good deed.” Rei huffed bitterly, shifting in his chair again, wincing, “Hey, is there somewhere I could change?”

Waldon nodded and gestured to the door by the right of the stove, “The bathroom’s over there. Do you need a change of clothes?”

“Uh, no.” Rei took one last bite of his sandwich before getting up, his chair screeching against the floor. The second Rei disappeared behind the door, Waldon let out a long exhale and dragged a hand down his face in frustration.

What the hell was he doing? He shouldn’t be taking in strays like this, again, not when it was finally his week to take care of Aster. But…. Rei didn’t seem dangerous, just mixed up with the wrong people. Waldon knew too well what that was like, he sighed, he couldn’t just kick him out with those brutes still around. At least here, he was protected.

Waldon pinched the bridge of his nose, he couldn’t let Rei stay here overnight with Aster. That was final.

“You okay?” Rei leaned against the door frame to the bathroom, a piece of black fabric neatly folded in his arms and the rest of his outfit unchanged.

Waldon laughed Rei’s concern, sitting up properly, “Of course! Sorry, just dreading seeing my sister-in-law today, haha.”

Rei seemed to buy that and sat back down at the table. “Ha, do I look like her?”

Waldon was surprised at the question, followed by confusion, “What do you mean?”

“Remember when you almost stabbed me?” Rei smiled, like it was a fond memory for him, “You mistook me for someone else, I guess. Who was it?”

“Oh.” Waldon’s stomach churned at the clarification, “Uh. Well no, you don’t look like my sister-in-law.” He struggled to come up with a good lie, “There’s some thugs around here causing trouble for business owners, trying to extort protection fees. You know, the usual nonsense.” He thumbed the rim of his glass of water, “I wouldn’t have actually stabbed you, I just would have wanted to scare them off.”

“Is it weird to say I know that feeling?” Rei didn’t seem to be suspicious as he continued to eat, “Being stabbed by a garden spade is not the way I wanna go out.”

“Sorry about that. Again.”

“It all worked out in the end.” Rei smiled gratefully, “Just let me know when you want me to leave, I really don’t want to bother you more than I have already.”

Waldon was deeply tempted by the offer, but shook his head. He was a hungry kid on the streets once, he knew the fear that Rei had to be feeling right now. As the church’s clock tower down the street chimed once, Waldon rose from his chair,  “Feel free to stay and raid the cabinets for a little while longer. I have to go back out to work the front.”

“Thank you, Waldon.” Rei smiled, then went back to finishing Waldon’s sandwich.
